Patek Philippe

A Comparison - Patek 5726 /1A-014 vs Patek 5740 / 1G. Would love to hear how the Forum members feel about each reference, which one they prefer

and please share any photos.

I will be happy to start. I recently acquired the pictured 5726. I do not own a 5740 and the image comes from the Patek website.

5726 - what I like about the 5726 are: the symmetrical and open, non-cluttered dial. I particularly like the day and date windows both stylistically and location wise. I much prefer a watch that has constant movement, in this case via the center seconds hand. For me a sports/sporty watch is better in steel than a precious metal (which is heavier and more prone to scratches and dings). Titanium would be the ultimate but unfortunately that is not an option. I like that the 5726 is far, far less expensive than the 5740, yet almost as complicated. If one wears the 5726 daily, one correction is required per year in February. If one alternates watches, one has to reset both the AC and PC frequently, so no real difference.

5740 - what I like about the 5740 are: the fact that it is a perpetual calendar and well deserving of its grand complication label. A Patek perpetual, any Patek perpetual is a very special watch. A very big plus is the ultra thin case and movement. I love the bright blue hue of the 5740 dial. It is pretty spectacular. I don’t like that it is in a precious metal and in particular WG.  (Were it rose I might feel different. For me if a watch is gold, I prefer it to look like gold. Otherwise,  what’s the point of WG vs steel. Platinum, the most noble of metals is different.)

All the above points are of course only reflective of my personal preferences. Nothing more, nothing less. Factoring in all factors including pricing my clear preference is the 5726.

Having said that, if 5740 came in steel but with the exact same dial, my preference would most likely flip to the 5740.

What are your thoughts and preferences?

Thanks for reading my post.

Best, Patekova
