Patek Philippe

Ref. 5089G-025

Appearing in 2015 as part of the “Ocean Liner” series from the Rare Handcrafts Collection, the cloisonné enamel dial depicts an ocean liner arriving in Manhattan.

The design of the liner seems to be based on ships like the RMS Queen Mary which sailed the North Atlantic Ocean during the 1920s to 1960s carrying passengers from Europe to the USA. The beginning of the jet age in the 1950s would lead to the decline of the economic viability of these vessels. As such, the watch evokes a bygone era which is bound to elicit discussion. I’ve never been on a cruise myself but somehow I like the mood communicated by this piece. Perhaps it is the evocation of the escapism in the leisurely pace of life on a spacious luxury liner that appeals.

The hinged caseback reveals calibre 240 which has 48 hours of power reserve and beats away at 21,600 vibrations per hour.
