Patek Philippe

The 2025 Rare Handcrafts Collection: Ref. 5177G-051 "Vineyards and Châteaux - Bordeaux".

Patek Philippe has unveiled an extraordinary addition to their Rare Handcrafts collection for 2025, and it's a true celebration of both horological artistry and French terroir. The ref. 5177G-051 pays homage to Bordeaux's legendary wine estates, capturing the refined architecture of their châteaux and surrounding vineyards in what may be one of the most technically demanding dials the manufacture has created.

The Artistry Behind the Dial This isn't simply a decorative dial – it's a masterclass in centuries-old enameling techniques. The craftspeople at Patek Philippe used Grand Feu cloisonné enamel as their foundation, beginning with approximately 81 centimeters of gold wire (just 0.34 grams) that was cut into tiny segments and painstakingly shaped by hand to create the outlines of buildings, vines, and even individual leaves in the foreground.

What makes this dial particularly remarkable is the enamelier's palette: 46 different colors spanning translucent, opaque, opalescent, and semi-translucent enamels. To achieve the dimensional depth – the volume and shadow effects on the château towers – miniature painting techniques using 6 additional enamel colors were employed.

The technical challenge becomes clear when you consider the firing process: each dial underwent approximately 20 separate firings at temperatures between 760°C and 780°C. Each firing risks cracking, color shifting, or complete failure. That Patek Philippe achieved consistency across ten pieces is testament to the skill level involved.

The Watch Itself

The 5177G Calatrava case, rendered in white gold, measures a classic 38mm in diameter and just 8.3mm in height. The bezel features hand-engraved Clous de Paris (hobnail pattern) – a signature Patek Philippe design element that adds textural contrast to the elaborate dial.

White gold Dauphine hands provide clarity without competing with the artwork below, while the shiny olive green alligator strap echoes the vineyard tones of the dial composition. Inside beats the caliber 240, Patek Philippe's elegant ultra-thin automatic movement, visible through the sapphire case back – offering a different kind of artistry for those who appreciate mechanical beauty.

The Edition

This is a limited series of just ten pieces in white gold, making it one of the more exclusive Rare Handcrafts releases. For collectors drawn to both viticultural culture and horological art, this represents a unique intersection of passions.
