It just ocurred to me re-reading some older posts and comments on this and other forums, that we all (right now) are living through a golden age of watchmaking and Patek is turning out the legends of the future, right before our eyes today. Whether it's the dial problems that have plagued the beautiful 5159 (which will surely limit the prodcution of the piece), or the too-short production and beautiful historical looks of the 5970 with the chronograph dial quirks (chrono markers overwritten by the words 'swiss made' at bottom of dial) .. or the beauty and rarity 5101 .. or the host of gorgeous Calatravas.. in wonderful dial finishes and platinum weight.. or an end to grand complicated pieces with metal bracelets with the halting of the 5136
These are wonderful times.. All these idiosyncracies will elevate these pieces as rarities in the future. It took decades for Patek to bring out the streak of fantastic pieces they've released over the past few years.. and with Thierry soon to take over from Henri there is a change in air - in direction... and although things will surely continue in the same overall way, there are unknowns. Softening economies around the world and financial strife in the house of those who would most easily afford these precious time-pieces.
I suspect we will look back on this time (these last 5 years) as a truly golden age of Patek.. Don't get me wrong, I know this firm will continue to thrive, but these last few years have been very special indeed. They have given us hit after hit. Surely not soon to be repeated.
Just savoring that moment.
