Iconic design, ingenious mechanics and exquisite craftsmanship.

The look of the Sixties, the traditional German watchmaker’s art and contemporary manufactory

expertise combine in the Sixties Square Tourbillon to create a uniquely compelling timepiece.

The unmistakable look of the Sixties has been captured perfectly by the designers in finely crafted,

telling details. The square 'cushion' shape of the rose gold case places the watch firmly in

the 20th century's most exciting decade, as do the stylish period numerals at 3, 9 and 12 o'clock.

The vintage Sixties layout of the matt silver dial enhances the watch's iconic character:

Glashütte Original's compelling implementation of the big date display is executed with slim black numerals

on a warm silver ground and placed opposite the extraordinary Flying Tourbillon, positioned at 6 o’clock.

Centered rose gold hour and minute hands glide over cutted rose gold hour indexes.

Flying Tourbillon mechanisms are perhaps the most fascinating example of the artistry and incomparable Technik

of the fine mechanical watches made by Glashütte Original at its manufactory in Glashütte.

The Flying Tourbillon was developed in 1920 by one of Germany's most remarkable master craftsmen and

teachers, Alfred Helwig, an instructor at the German School of Watchmaking in the Saxon city.

The traditional tourbillon mechanism, designed to counter the effect of gravity on rate precision,

is anchored at both the top and the bottom. Helwig’s version implemented a ‘cantilevered’ mechanism

that was anchored on one side only and was for that reason characterized as a ‘flying’ tourbillon.

The Flying Tourbillon remains an extraordinary aesthetic and horological invention, and with

the Sixties Square Tourbillon, Glashütte Original pays tribute to a dedicated teacher and

watchmaker extraordinaire, born 125 years ago this year.

The Senator Sixties Tourbillon is powered by the exquisitely finished automatic Caliber 94-12,

equipped with a 48-hour power reserve. The Flying Tourbillon mechanism is easily admired through

the anti-reflective domed sapphire crystal protecting the dial. The screw balance features 18 weighted screws

in the cage, which completes one rotation per minute, indicated by the small seconds hand on the cage.

Additional evidence of the Art and Technik of mechanical watches from the Saxon watch manufactory

may be examined through the domed sapphire crystal case back.

Characteristic features include the three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing, a range of galvanized surfaces,

polished steel components, blued screws, bevelled edges and winding wheel with a single sunburst decoration.

The off-centre rotor features a 21-carat oscillating weight, Glashütte ribbing and the finely crafted double-G mark

of Glashütte Original. This finely finished movement was designed by the in-house construction department and

crafted in the tradition-rich watchmaker’s own manufacture in Glashütte, the home of fine mechanical watches since 1845.

The Sixties Square Tourbillon is outfitted with a black Louisiana alligator skin strap and folding clasp in satin brushed rose gold.

Glashütte Original presents the Sixties Tourbillon in a strictly limited and numbered edition of 50 pieces."







This model has piqued my curiosity. I'm not aware of the pricing yet, but my guess is that the tab will be a pleasant surprise for those considering the addition of a tourbillon to their collection.
