There's less to the resurgence of the cal 39 . . .

. . . than meets the eye, Mike. The decision for three of the four (Sixties, Seventies Square, and WorldView) was driven by the aesthetic necessity of a centrally located date aperture, which can only be fulfilled by the cal 39 movement. The cal 22 would also work, but that's a very different type of movement, and not in keeping with the gestalt of any of these three novelties.

The real curiosity, in my book, is the Senator Automatic. I don't know if the current Senator Automatic equipped with a special version of the cal 100 movement will be discontinued, but there was always an anomalous aspect to the employment of the cal 100 in that design because its most valuable characteristic was lost with the deletion of the seconds hand. My guess is the Powers That Be decided to continue the austere Senator Automatic with the cal 39 movement and re-directed the production of the cal 100 to models that expressly benefit from its unique design.

Cordially, Art
