Art,
First, thanks for taking the time to respond to my posting.
"Our forum exists for those interested in Glashütte Original to share their thoughts and opinions about G O; I'm profoundly uncomfortable fielding questions pitting a G O against a watch from another reputable manufacturer, and prefer not to get drawn into hypothetical match-ups such as the one just presented, fully acknowledging that I just responded to a similar inquiry in the last few days. "
While I understand your personal discomfort in responding to a watch "A" vs. "B" question, I am a bit surprised by your response. I am posting to a forum of experienced GO owners, who may have infact owned the watch that I am considering. They may have also owned this JLC or another one. I was not asking if one was "better" than the other. I aknowledged that they were both fine timepieces. I was trying to understand if one was manufactured at a higher volume (perhaps explained price difference)? I wanted to learn ownership aspects (e.g. the bracelet pulls my arm hair, the AR coating on the crystal scratched easily, it wears small or large etc.).
"The simple truth is that no one can advise you on a choice between A and B . . . only you will be able to decide which suits your tastes and needs. I've previously established my partiality to G O (as well as a few other manufacturers), and it would be unrealistic to expect a purely unbiased opinion from me. Both G O and JLC are manufacturers of the highest repute, and I very much doubt that there are any meaningfully significant technical differences between them . . . it's true the cal 100 has an especially deep and broad power reserve, but that would have to be a matter of importance for you in order for it to be significant. It's a benefit as far as I'm concerned, but not one that would make or break a decision to acquire a watch. "
While I did ask which you would choose and why, I did so for insight and learning and not to make a decsion for me. Of course the decsion will need to be made by me. I posted a similar thread in the JLC area for the exact same reason. I expect some preference and bias towards the forums brand. I have found however, in cyber-watch communities a weath of unbiased information in brand specific forums.
"In my humble opinion, aesthetic considerations are as important as any in making a decision about a watch, and in the long term, aesthetics might be the most important single consideration. My suggestion is that you find a dealer that carries both and try them on simultaneously; one or the other will emerge as a favorite after several minutes of wrist time, and I hope that whatever decision you make will be one that is satisfying next year and beyond . . . cordially, Art "
I fully concur with your comment regarding aesthetic decisions (how could I disagree being trained both an industrial designer and engineer...
. Your suggestion regarding finding an AD who has both of these watches is a great one. The problem is I can't find one who does. I live in the Metro NYC region. I called Tourneau and Wempe in (NYC) and Guvberg (Phili) and they do not have these watches in inventory (despite what some of their websites say). I have spoken extensively with a great GO AD in my region, but he does not have the watch. It will need to come from GO. The same is true with my local JLC dealer with that watch. Basically, if you live where I do and you want one of these watches in Mar 2009 you will have to have it ordered sight unseen.
In summary, while I understand the difficulty in responding to a comparison, I do not feel as if I asked something out of school. I was asking for thoughts and opinions about a GO watch in the context of a decision. I also suspect that many GO owners may also be JLC owners and may provide insights and subtle distinctions that only experience and ownership can bring. If I have broken the forums rules, I do apologize. I did not think the GO forum was exclusively limited to GO owners and prospective buyers discussing GO and GO watches and nothing beyond that in scope.
Respectfully,
Bob
