i'd like to offer a slightly different perspective on making cross brand comparisons, and i present this from basically a novice's perspective. although i've got a few go's and some other brands, and i read some of the magazines etc., i really don't know ...

that the JLC is quite a thick watch, at 13mm, especially for a dressy piece.

How about after-sales service? I have owned JLC - master geographic. When it got 5 years old, it stopped. So, I took it to Wempe and had it sent to JLC service center (which is, I was told, also in somewhere in NYC). Later I was told it would take 22 week...

As has been noted, one is for fine adjustment of the rate, and the other for fine adjustment of the beat. The fine adjustment for the beat is not at all necessary (if you have ever adjusted beat error you'll know this) and is there as decoration only IMO....
