I feel like a lot more was possible back in the 90s and 2000s. Not just watches but cars as well. Look at the Audi S6 and RS6 with a V10 engine, the BMW E60 M5 with the V10 engine as well. Those were the golden days. Anything goes. Then came the regulations, co2, ... you name it and that was the end of it. 

Looking at the 90s (or at least my sentiment) brands did what they think was best and they produced and developed and kept going. Often enough a hit or a miss. But those misses aren't actual misses looking back, they were too far ahead of time. Quirky and fun watches, annual/perpetual calenders, ... you name it. 

Ever since the watch hype really gained traction around 2016-17 brands became aware, they looked at what the market wanted and asked and started playing that game instead of developing and making what they felt was right. It makes sense because I'm sure a lot of Swiss brands lost money in the 90s and 2000s because they made watches that no one asked for.
