Horological Meandering

Great question.

The issue, and I am sure you have experienced that just as I have with independant watchmakers, is that the EDT, the expected delivery time, as informed by the watchmaker at the outset is often just a shot in the dark, a wish, a hope, at best a mere estimate. As pointed out elsewhee in the thread it all depends. Are we talking about a watch which is already in production or are we talking about a project watch, yet to be conceived? As a patron, being part of the latter is quite special and this means some form of partnership and commands loyalty and patience. Watchmaking is often a very complex proces. Often the watchmaker is simply learning by doing. And when he/ she is venturing into unchartered territory, he/ she is often incapable to advance a delivery date. Is there research and a lot of development to be made? Patents to be filed? Complex prototypes to be made? Besides a watchmaker often has more than one project on the go. New ones might come in and jump the queue... And those projects do not always go in a linear way. Staff come in and out. New machines might have to be purchased, new facilities... The more complex the project the more likely it is for the delivery to be pushed back and back and back. It is pure utopia to think that a watchmaker works on one project from start to finish without interruptions. The watchmaker has bills to pay, watches need to be sold regularly and that often means that time has to be devoted on what will be bringing money sooner than later. In the case of small ateliers the development of a new, (very) complicated watch will often therefore take much more time than anticipated. This for me is part and parcel of commissioning a watch from an independant watchmaker. Time can vary greatly. I can say that one of such projects started in April 2013... the watch might materialise in the course of next year or the year after. I do not mind and that for quite a number of reasons.

For "run of the mill" watches, the time I am ready to wait for is zero. I wanted a Rolex GMT for my son. I went to my AD and informed them of my intention some 5 months in advance. The watch was unobtainable. The watch materialised as per enchantment in time for my son's birthday. Therefore no real wait here,  just good planning and quite a lot of persuasion/ PR work..
