Horological Meandering

Agreed...

I do agree with you; I hate to say it (especially as a Rolex owner).

I've been known to comment to some of my friends that "gold-digging" women actually are incredibly ignorant. If you set out to gold dig you wouldn't go for the guy necessarily with the Rolex you'd be able to spot a limited edition AP a mile off, but then you could sport a Newman and no one would notice either!

So what's my point? Well three points really:

1. Someone wearing a gold Rolex presidential for status or "bling" is almost definitely going to be, and I'm going to stereotype hard at the risk of potentially offending, obnoxious if you start asking about their watch or commenting how good it looks. There are always exceptions to the rule, but you don't "rock" a Jacobs and Co if you don't want your garish watch to be noticed.
2. The more rare/specialised unique the brand the more likely you will see receive a positive reaction from the individual. As by identifying the rarity you are displaying knowledge.
3. Maybe women have to approach this whole scenario completely differently to men so as not to risk being seen to be looking for a sugar-daddy/future wealthy partner etc.

I attach an old photo I took with a friend's Jacobs and Co (the ring was also theirs). Not to my taste!
