I was invited by a parisian AD to the 2008 Soccer European Championship to attend a game between Germany and Poland.
I was in Klagenfurt, Austria.
So, once arrived at the hotel, we took the bus to go to the Stadium.
There were only 7 people in the bus.
Then, the bus stopped and picked 3 more guys.
One of them sat just close to me and was wearing a Vintage Panerai, a Small Egiziano, Ref 6154.
A few were made, something around 30, maybe.
The very same watch was promised to me by a Spanish collector.
I complimented the gebtleman who wore it " Hey, this is a very nice small egiziano you have here! "
The gentleman in question was as shocked and surprised to hear that compliment that I was to see it on his wrist.
The other coincidence is that this gentleman is Ralf Ehlers, well known in the Panerai Community. I knew his name, but never met him.
He knew me virtually, but never saw me, either.
With such a coincidence, I should have played the lottery the very same day, I would have won.
Did I do well? Certainly.
Because it was a super rare watch, because I knew it, because so few people know that model.
I think all is in the way you start the conversation. If you are in the right mood to do so, why not?
At the opposite, you should always think how does a nice girl feel in a park, to be complimented each five minutes for her beauty.
It is a matter of context.
If you feel you have the opportunity to do it well, do it.
If you doubt, don't do it.
Best,
Nicolas
