Beater Update
So, I settled on a speedie pro, however, something else caught my eye, something on the dressy side, and the speedy pro is on hold for now. In the meantime, I purchased a seiko 5 automatic, and it's really growing on my. It's got a black face, fairly simple, and extremely legible, which is way more than half the battle for me.

I find that I put it on for rougher situations, for example, I wore it tonight when I rode 20 miles on my bike, and then I don't bother to take it off. It has a beautiful lume, for about 2 minutes, but it's beautiful while it lasts. Very comfortable and light.
It came with an extremely uncomfortable nylon strap - it dug into my skin like I was being punished for something - and I swapped it out for the Natoish thing that's on there now for $8.
Here's a shot. Sorry for the double post, can't figure out how to undo it. I wouldn't typically wear it with a jacket like this, but I'm freezing in this starbucks, and it's all I had in my car.

Funny, I actually came across this seiko. It's for sure
a very affordable option. I'm on the fence about the diver look, but i suspect may be the sturdiest designs. I was considering explorer for a lot more money than the seiko due to cosmetics. Thanks!

How is omega for reliability and ruggedness?
That last one with the orange looks great! And so shiny. Will probably scratch up well! Was looking at a seamaster great white GMT. May be too pretty to beat.

I tried on the red, and I loved it except for some gold accents on the indices. Felt like a deal breaker to me.
