The "part 1" indicates, that I plan over time to post 5 or so notes to the above topic and I am curious to get your opinions on this:
Phase 1:
Starting to collect watches I assume starts with many of us evolving around either one particular brand or even one particular reference within a brand. In my case, this was the Omega Speedmaster pre-145.022 (or: Speedmasters with caliber 321).
Phase 2:
When I write "Phase 2", it does not mean that "Phase 1" has stopped, it actually continues while "Phase 2" kicks in in parallel. At some point in time, I started to expand into other vintage Omega models like Seamaster.
Phase 3:
This was an important step which started - again in parallel - shortly after the start of "Phase 2": expanding into other brands. Here I would distinguish between what I call "anchor-brands" and "miscellaneous". My additional anchor brands next to Omega became IWC and Heuer. And some very targeted and punctual additions in "miscellaneous" brands such as Rolex, Patek, Audemars, Vacheron.
Phase 4:
This is an interesting one I guess; it is the one that I would call the "sub-topics" phase that will be part of this little series of posts: thematic sub-topics. I list herebelow a number of my sub-topics that I got into:
- first four Generations of IWC Ingenieur, all in steel with steel bracelet and black dial, i.e. Ref. 666 / 866 / 1832 and 3508
- Heuer Bunds in their variations i.e. Leonidas Bund (the original), the Heuer Bund "normal", the Heuer Bund "3H" and the Heuer Bund "Sternzeitreguliert"
- the Icons (or: "Jumbo's") of Genta: AP RO 5402, PP Nautilus 3700, IWC Ingenieur 1832 (and for completeness' sake I also got Hysek's Vacheron 222 Jumbo)
- Doulbe badge dials: Heuer Carrera 2447 "Meister", IWC Golf Club "Beyer", Omega Speedy 105.012-65 "Meister" etc.
I stop the list here, it could be added with things like: "army provenance" i.e. F.A.P., PAF, Bund etc.
I'd be curious to have a discussion here on how you guys started and evolved your collections.
Cheers, HSTE
