I don't think that display is as critical as intention and organization. Type, date, style, function, material, etc. Anything that serves as an organizing principle.

I've never considered myself a collector of anything. I've had about a dozen high-end timepieces in my lifetime so far, but never more than a few at any one time....

"Things I'll never use". Oh...wait...I have a storage locker back in Ohio with this very collection in it.

My personal way of being a collector is enjoying having several examples of the same thing, whether watches or Zuni fetishes. My personal intention was never to build a collection, but I have enjoyed and still enjoy owning several, each with its own uniqu...  

As many ways to collect as there are personalities.

I just buy what I like and when I cease to like it I sell it or give it away. I think "collecting" is a far more deliberate activity. And it can lead to hoarding probably.
