I think about Art's pool cues. I assume that each one was acquired to meet a specific use case (although probably several are no longer in active use).
For me, it's musical instruments, each one of which was acquired for the personal use of myself or a family member. Some I still use myself; others are loaned out. None is on display. Not a collection?
For what it's worth, when people ask me if I collect musical instruments, I tend to say something like "No, I just have a bunch of them."

I don't think that display is as critical as intention and organization. Type, date, style, function, material, etc. Anything that serves as an organizing principle.

I've never collected anything. I've gone through a lot of watches and keep about 10 keepers but I'm just an enthusiast.
I just buy what I like and when I cease to like it I sell it or give it away. I think "collecting" is a far more deliberate activity. And it can lead to hoarding probably.
