Interesting. I guess there are different ways of collecting and being a collector.
My personal way of being a collector is enjoying having several examples of the same thing, whether watches or Zuni fetishes.
My personal intention was never to build a collection, but I have enjoyed and still enjoy owning several, each with its own unique personality. Collecting for me is about enjoying the diversity of something I love.
Francis Hutcheson defined beauty as a “form” or as “Figures . . . in which there is Uniformity amidst Variety”: for me, collecting is precisely about bringing variety to uniformity. I'm particularly fond of certain things (Zuni fetishes, dress watches) that could be considered uniform (I always come back to the same type of watches or fetishes), and collecting brings precisely that variety...

I don't think that display is as critical as intention and organization. Type, date, style, function, material, etc. Anything that serves as an organizing principle.

I've never considered myself a collector of anything. I've had about a dozen high-end timepieces in my lifetime so far, but never more than a few at any one time....

I've never collected anything. I've gone through a lot of watches and keep about 10 keepers but I'm just an enthusiast.
I just buy what I like and when I cease to like it I sell it or give it away. I think "collecting" is a far more deliberate activity. And it can lead to hoarding probably.
