Perhaps the appeal lies in the fact that perfection in impossible by most objective standards, since hand-made items by definition will be perfect. Because it is impossible to achieve, it make the pursuit of perfection so much more desirable. A parallel can be draw with landing on the moon, for many thousands of years the moon was an absolute mystical object, venerated and the subject of science fiction, because it was impossible to actually know more about the moon, but once humans got there it's hardly as interesting.
