The notion of intent, I think, is a good one. But again, I wonder: what about the intent of the engineers who developed the quartz watch, or the radio-controlled Casio? Weren't they also engaged in a quest for perfection? Or do we dismiss their efforts as the product of market forces? Personally, I'm not quite ready to claim that none of these brilliant folks are immune to the quest for perfection in and of itself--perfection, in this case, as embodied in the idea of perfect accuracy always available on one's wrist.
But again, even if that was their motivation, I doubt they'd claim they're making a luxurious item.
