Right now...
.. I'm not taking them seriously enough to invest that amount of money with, on their mechanical watches... Please don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Hermes myself.
The way I see Hermes, is the epitome of handcrafted leather goods. For their leather goods, I'm more than happy to pay the price they charge for them.
They naturally would like to expand their expertise onto other fields, such as home ware, jewelry and watches. However, in a way, I think they are overpriced. Take an example, their jewelry are as much as prestigious powerhouses like Bulgari and Cartier. Their porcelain home wares are priced like they're made in Meissen.
If I reverse the situation, and Patek went the other way, and made a leather handbag and priced it at $10k would people take them seriously? That's the question I ask myself. If they want $2k for the bag, that's a different story.
I'm not doubting their quality. They are quite innovative as of recent years, but I think it would take a much longer time for them to gain a high level of respect for what they're doing, for them to be pricing their watches at this level.
Afterall, watches is only a small line of their entire product range. This also might be a reason why I'm not taking them seriously.
