the reluctance to wear a special/precious piece even though the initial motivation was the chance to wear it. This actually may be where my “issue” is specific to me, since I am starting to understand that some collectors pursue certain pieces for ownership and occasional viewing, but not necessarily for wearing. I give you credit for ultimately letting it go.

that we are actually fortunate that we cannot afford to buy all the watches that we want. I truly think that we would appreciate each purchase more if we had made sacrifices to secure the timepiece.

That would be me too, however this was special circumstances as it was bought in the middle of 2020, peak Pandemic.
I wasn’t going anywhere, not to the office, not out to eat. Because of that it sat unworn for probably a year before somewhat normal life crept back. If the timing had of been different the watch would have been worn.
Only a few times. And generally, I buy them back.
One example: The Rolex Yacht Master.
My fallback is the high likelihood of buying the watch again, will not too commonly seen they did make a bunch of them !
There’s a chance I move on and forget too, we’ll see. The curious aspect is that I didn’t wear it for three years and yet have this potential regret.

There are a few more transactions required to get to that desired end point, this was merely the highest hurdle.
I try to only sell if I already know how to spend it.
Otherwise, I “lose” out on a watch for some cash… and I can’t wear the cash. But to your point, if we want liquidity to make a quick decision or already have an incoming notice and selling a piece that hasn’t been worn seems prudent, especially if you fee...
