Horological Meandering

This year was my first visit at the Longines booth and I couldn't choose a better moment to do it! Longines is celebrating its 180th anniversary with a wide range of commemorative models. Actually, two collections were presented at Baselworld: - The 180th...  

The Date on most of the dials, and, first of all, THE movements... When you think what Longines was, it is a pity to see what the brand is. I am waiting for THE Longines re birth, with some nice and fine movements.... Like in the past. Sad... Too sad. Bes... 

It would not make sense for the Swatch Group to build up Longines as a manufacture brand with high-end movements, aside Breguet, GO and Blancpain. Longines' purpose is to offer competitively priced, well designed watches with a name that transports emotio... 

I have nothing an affordable Longines such as the Legend Diver, for example, which is a terrific watch and fairly ( not to say a bargain ) priced. But when you still have in mind the marvels Longines released, such as the finest Chronos ( 13 ZN, 30 CH ...... 

some pieces in the past, I love this type of real lindbergh. It is interestingly offered with the term "Replica"...  

pretty dismal... each model has a certain all right-ness, which some element ruins abysmally... the final model is OK, even with date, but looks at best like a really, really expensive Timex. As Nicolas said, when you recall the majesty of this brand... i... 

The Vintage, I mean... When you look at the movement, it is pure delight for the eyes. What do we have with the re edition? Cosmetically, it is ok, but have a look at the movement, and you immediately feel... Sad. Best, Nicolas.

Aside from the date window issue, they look really beautiful and attractive, but when you turn them… disappointment shows its face, literally and figuratively. Best Marcelo

They fall short of the quality and appeal of, say, Piaget, AP, Breguet, Omega, Rolex and the like (Seiko automatics, Tudors also). I like the chronometer and applaud Longines (and ETA) for their effort to appeal to a wider audience, but they don't quite m... 

And i say that with a bit of "nervousness". But the reality is what Marcus shared. Having said that, it would be nice if Longines doesn't fall into the trap of pandering too much to this market base. If anything, a bit of responsibility to its past by way... 

Thank you for the report. Some very nice new models from Longines there. The last one in particular is very pleasing as it has case design "feeling" like a Vacheron, the dial is very Jaeger, the hands very Rolex ... but it works ... for me. The wide range... 

I have a personal relation with Longines (It was my first real watch) and this chronograph is a good step on the right direction. If, and only if, the price is also nice, why not? Cheers, Nilo

The design is very attractive. Sure the movement isn't spectacular to look at, but for someone looking for a classicly designed and reliable wristwatch, I think there is great value at this price point. I assume your wrist photo is of the 41 mm version FX... 

all of you make an excellent point about the date windows. still, i do like the aesthetics of the faces on a number of these, and, if they're entry level or whatever term you like, that's fine too. but my complaint would be the rotors. they just look poor... 

The date window is where for forty years the date window was on Zenith's El Primero, and barely anybody seemed to dislike it. Personally, I even applaud the Longines designers for the good integration of the date windows in the case of these chronographs:...

...regardless of placement. There are times when it's interesting -- on certain "big date" watches or on a triple calendar, but I will almost always prefer a watch to NOT have a date display. I must be in the minority, because it seems that most people LO... 

Generally, I, too, consider date windows an element disturbing the dial design. But I need it, and would rather bite away my hand than pulling out my cellphone only to look which date we have ... Regards, Marcus
