Drives me nuts but whatever
I am a hardcore turnaround guy with a fair bit of jewelry experience. My cofounder was the ceo of a jewelry brand with a 3 letter domain
Watches are different, but much of consumer is the same.
Drives me nuts how much EASY profit is sitting around for a lot of these brands.
…but their goal isn’t maximizing EBITDA anyways, so I guess it doesn’t matter.
They aren’t really entrepreneurs either. They are artists that use a business to fulfill their creative needs.
For example, almost all brands contribute to completing budgets for their ADs, and the ADs blow these budgets on non-incremental advertising that does absolutely nothing for the brands. This is a fact because I’ve done it in adjacent categories with 0 hit to revenue.
I know one brand is definitely losing 5% of revenue per year on this, which is a huge chunk of NET because they only run at 12% net.
But, they don’t seem to care lol. 😂
The founders just want to make watches and don’t feel the p&l really matters.
Most of the ADs are like this as well.
I think it’s a bit of a shame, but I get why people don’t have passion for the art of business. It’s boring for many.
