I think there are 2 kinds of independent watchmakers when they start out....
One is the artist and the other is the engineer type. And in my experience they use a different part of the brain to be what they are.
Obviously there is a spectrum of both but the artist is rarely good at number and business. The engineer type is often more math/analytical type and he may or may not be good at business.
The artiste is often more interested in the case/dial/hands or the design and the engineer is probably more inclined to be excited by the movement of the watch.
So in my opinion probably both these types NEED a business person to steer the ship as I doubt they are gifted in that way.
