It's an impressive step forward
The perfect mechanical calendar watch does not exist and is unlikely to exist in the near future. Berneron's annual calendar offers a compelling mix of symmetry, compactness, idiot-proof adjustment and instantaneous window jumps. For this to come from a young brand with a non-watchmaker principal speaks highly of Sylvain's ambition and talent.
The big challenge will be to deliver on this promise with reliable operation and good time keeping. It's well known that a lot of complicated watches don't work very well. It's not just new brands, but some brands that very prestigious, brands that are award winning. Sometimes they don't work well without a few patches and sometimes they never live up to the promise. If Sylvain's annual calendar combines its on-paper attributes with good time-keeping and reliable operation, the asking price becomes fair. Few will have buyer's remorse.
Based on what I've heard and what I've experienced, it's a challenge to get a complicated watch like this to work properly, let alone get it working as reliably as a mass produced watch. Delivering such a watch with a high level of reliability and good after-sales service would put Sylvain Berneron in very rare company. That won't grab headlines like a product roadmap that introduces a new model every year, but it would be even more impressive, in my opinion.
