The "younger generation" you speak to...
I'm 40 and sell watches to people in their 20s and 30s. Any younger than that, and they're buying Timex. There's still plenty of interest in old brands and especially Patek, AP, and Vacheron. If anything, I'd say there's more interest in Vacheron and Patek today than ten year ago.
I've handled more watches than most people alive, and there's nothing inherently superior about smaller brands' products. In fact, their product development pace often lags behind the big brands, and when there's a problem, it can take longer to resolve. People - of all ages - almost always choose independents because of some kind of personal connections to the people behind the brands or some level of access that's not possible from a Patek-sized company.
Best,
Tim
