IWC

I had a fortuitous experience with the Australian distributor of Dornbluth...

A few months ago at Brisbane Airport I got to speaking to Peter Petzold of "Define Watches" at a stall he had set up to display his various brands (mostly German brands including Dorn).  He is the only importer of German watches in Aust IIRC.  He gave me the excellent Dornbluth range catalog to keep which showcases the watches and the company’s philosophy nicely.

He was a fantastic guy to deal with and gave me the opportunity to handle many of the Dornbluth range while we talked watches in general.  They are much nicer in the steel than net photos indicate.  The movements are stunningly decorated and have an interesting pedigree in the German tradition.

I love the IWC Portuguese 7 day and I think it is a great watch, from a respected house but if you have a hankering for something independent of the major brands I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dornbluth.  If I were in the market for an independent I would certainly consider a Dorn as they represent excellent bang for buck and a really cool niche in the market IMO.

I would ask why your considering the Regulator specifically rather than something like the Kaliber 99.2 (1) ST or Kaliber 99.2  (5) ST models which  would more directly compare with the Portuguese in that they have power reserve indicator and sub-seconds?   Are you particularly interested in owning a Regulator because I would lean to the stunning Kal 99.2(5) ST but that is just my taste.  I love the dial layout and blued hands.

Let us know which way you go.

Regards,

Zac
