Montblanc

I hope you get the chance to examine one in detail soon

it will cement your thoughts about the quality of the Villeret line.

I don't care much for overlapping dials usually as it clutters the look and makes reading time more difficult but take a closer look.  Notice the inverted ring with the hash indicies?  not only does it help focus your eyes to the center of the dial but it actually makes it easier to read the time intuitively.  Your eyes will naturally move outward from the middle of the dial.  The hours hand is the shortest so it will be read first, followed by the longer hours hand.  Using this layout it is easy to read the minutes hand.  look at the inverted has markings between 3-9.  this is because the shorter hours hand will rest on the romanized numbers and moving outwards the hash marks allows the minutes hand to be read easily without any confusion.  Interesting?  I hope I've described this effect well.

Montblanc recognizes the challenge of making inroads amongst serious collectors and the difficulty involved with changing their purchasing habits but I think they've got a secret marketing formula...this is where Minerva, under previous ownership, failed considerably.  MB has the resources to remain competitive during these unstable economic times and has the luxury of name recognition in the general public.  Most consumers will never know the name of Vacheron but they will instantaneously recognize the Montblanc name.  In this specific case the general public would be right in making a general assumption that MB makes a better watch and carries a higher price tag .

As an aside, look at the popularity of Montblanc's jewelry division.  Old money-> Cartier, new money-> Montblanc, Chopard.

Best, Mike
