I personally do not understand this notion

 

Montblanc is a luxury brand that covers within its origin (fountain pens) a price range from about USD 800 to USD 2.5 million. I cannot find another example for a successful luxury brand with such a broad range of customers (and even 800 USD is a lot for a writing instrument made of resin). Branding the old-fashioned Minerva technology with their modern design ideas is pretty legitimate to me - and the brand does add value imho. In the least by acquiring Minerva in 2004 and saving it from disappearing from the market.
