It’s funny I still get excited over a clone copy of the original PreV series. I guess after all I have been Paneristi before. But is this watch good news or bad news for the brand?
Fwiw, most collectors feel the price is too much but I reckon some might succumb to it and buy it, since the preV alternative is too expensive.
Then there’s the question of brand value, in particular PreV value and how collectible they still are. When Panerai cloned the 301/A, some collectors (including myself) sold the watch. So what does this mean for the future of Panerai collectibility, in particular preV and vintage? After all, history and in particular, historical aesthetics (i.e. non matching lume, fat squiggly Arabic numerals etc) are most important to Panerai.
I guess, if you are not a PreV owner you would (like me) be excited over the prospects of owning one. However if you are a preV owner, you would probably pass on it. It could be frustrating to see a PreV homage, as there is likely erosion of value (in all sense of the word) here.
And…lastly one final thought. One could argue that all the blockbuster references (203, 127, 217, 249, 232 etc) are in some way homages to the vintage pieces…and 10-15 years ago PAM prices and buyer enthusiasm for at an all time high.
Hope I didn’t open a can of worms here, but I hope we can all have a heathy, insightful discussion here. After all we are all collectors and want our watches to be collectible lol 😂
