Patek Philippe

A brief tribute to the Aquanaut

I remember the first time I paid attention to the Aquanaut, on the wrist of my friend Tony at European Watch Company here in Boston. It was one of the older smaller references, from before Patek integrated the rubber straps, and he was wearing it on a black shell cordovan strap. That whetted my interest, but not enough for me to try to buy one. For years after that I'd say that I *liked* the Aquanaut but was never too excited about it, and when its prices started spiraling upwards I was pretty turned off. Perfectly excellent watch, I would say, at retail price, but not worth what people ask for them.

At the same time, I would have said, and would continue to say, that one of my all-time dream watches was that steel 565 with black dial, central seconds, arabic numerals, luminous hands. You know, the one that was supposedly made for the Patek factory's night watchman. It costs more than I could ever pay, but I thought its nature as the everyday/sporty/simple/kinda military but not all technical/easy to dress up if you wanted too Patek made it worthy of a stratospheric price.

You guys can probably see where this is going.

One thing led to another and last year I bought an Aquanaut, a 5066a. It cost more than I would have previously thought acceptable, though still a lot less than the larger, integrated strap 5067 that I don't like quite as much anyway. I wore it out for a morning workout in the park today, and when I came inside the luminous hands and markers were glowing (sorry no lume pic!) and I realized: this watch is it! It's a Patek in steel, with black dial, central seconds, arabic numerals, luminous hands. I've been wearing it as an everyday watch, to work or around town with my usual outfits. It's sporty enough, especially with its rubber strap and screw down crown, that I've worn it swimming and for jogs and workouts. It looks perfectly natural with a jacket and tie, the one time I've worn jacket and tie in the last year. It does for me everything that I used to dream of that 565 doing, and more. It's the simple black dial steel everyday Patek I'd always dreamed of, and it had been there waiting for me all along.

Here it is after a run:

And here it is before a lecture:
