One does not always find the time to dissect such rare and beautiful works of art, but I chose to do so recently to pursue my passion and mature my pallet. As I mentioned earlier, I surprised myself regarding the 5204, truth be told I am a bit saddened by my conclusion. It reminds my of the feeling I had when I first discovered that Santa Clause does not exist 😀
There is a perception that one cannot dislike or overly critique such "grail" timepieces. I regularly tell myself, how dare I, a mere mortal form an opinion about such horological masterpieces!! I struggled to remain objective considering the fact it is a Patek Philippe grand complication, but I later concluded that this is exactly why I need to remain true to how I feel and set the bar high. I was smitten with the 5204 when I first saw it in the metal sometime ago, but something did not sit well with me even then. The fact I have laid my demons to rest is very satisfying.
I can say the same for the 5959, not only a work of art, but it defies belief! I have nothing negative to say about the 5959, except that at 33.2mm it is not a watch I would enjoy wearing frequently. It is probably one I would keep locked away and enjoy over a glass of Chardonnay, but I have always been of the opinion that a fine timepiece is not just for Christmas and should be enjoyed regularly.
