For me, it was the 5970
I have owned both. In fact I sold my 3970 to pay for my 5970. On their merits, they should both be "great classics" as they are essentially the same watch. However, like many I think the 3970 is out of porportion. It is still a great watch to own, but the beauty of the 5970 is inarguable.
I have not kept up with prices, but would be quite surprised to learn that the 3970 sells for more than the 5970. Is that really true? I paid more for the 5970 and have always thought it was both an easy and good decision. In the end, it is you who has to love the watch.
In my admittedly simple view, the only competition at this price level is each other, and the various metals to choose from.

how ever it is a very personal choice. If you decide to go for the 3970 I think you would actually find yourself saving money not adding it.
