How important is the choice of strap to one's overall enjoyment of a Patek?
For me the answer is VERY! A great strap can enormously improve the look and indeed character of any watch, high end, low end, Patek or other brand.
In general, Patek supplied men's straps are black or brown (most common), dark gray or dark blue. Patek does have a wide and colorful assortment of custom straps. And of course one need not be limited to Patek straps.
I think it would be very interesting and fun if Forum members were to post images of their Patek watches where they went in a different direction than wearing the strap supplied by Patek. I will be happy to start wth a trio of watches where the custom Patek straps I chose were starkly different than than the straps that came with the watches.

Interestingly when I ordered the strap for the J I thought it would be a darker blue just like the one on the G. At first I was disappointed, but only until I put it on the J. Then I was extremely happy.

Mike, the strap on the J is called shiny royal blue. The strap on the G I ordered sometime ago. I think it also might've been royal blue. Please note that the color you order and receive may not not be exactly as it is in the book and yes the straps I ord...

Yes, I also find black dial watches limit the strap choice,
Particularly with a white metal case, but in addition to black, there is black with white stitch (which Patek supplied with many 5070Gs) and a light champagne (often favored by Italian and other collectors). With a rose case a reddish brown can work well....
