Hi guys, I'm considering making a purchase of a Patek. This would be the first Patek I will own, and I'm confused as to which piece to go for amongst the following: Nautilus 5712R, 5980R or 5980/1A. I know either of these pieces would be a great buy, but ...  

Just my opinion... Of the modern patek Nautilus... the 5712 seems to have a certain panache... that the 5980 does not... 5712 being more versatile.. sporty yet equally elegant... but also a little mysterious because of the moon... I dunno... just prefer i... 

Didn't mean to be so harsh against the 5980... I've always had mixed feelings about it... but to clarify: the reason I think it can't really be a sportwatch (which it very much LOOKS like) is that bezel--which will just never hold up to actual devil-may-c...

5712 is great : manual ,beautiful movment , wonderful moonphase ... but you know what ? i picked 5980 ! lol www.servimg.com geetings from France...

I prefer the complication of the 5980... but the slender case of the 5712. Difficult answer... so at the end I would take the 5712 because I love the 240 caliber. Fx

My brother and GF both loves the 5980 but I wouldnt think twice before buying the 5712. It's WAY thinner, much more elgeant and better looking imo, go for that one and DONT FORGET TO POST PICS!!!

first the weight, at 145 grams very comfy to wear IMO, but I have to say I'm used to wear watches up to 200 gr ( AP ROO, Panerai etc ...) my biggest fear was that this watch would be to small in terms of size compared to the rest of my collection and the ...

5960 and 5980 are very different as many have already said. I would love to own both but the idea of vesting 2 Pateks of the same movement and similar function is bogging me. My resolution is to trade my 5960 for a 5980 and I can only tell which one wins ... 

I know it sounds hypocritical to recommend a watch I don't own but I do own the closest living relative, the 3712 which was my first Patek. My AD had just gotten a 3712 in stock and I was in the right place at the right time. He even sold it to me at 15% ... 

and found a simple solution: - 3712. It's the sister of 5712 and is a slim alternative with a lovely movement. - 5980/1A-001 is a great chronograph. - 5711/1A-010 is a good copy of the "original". I think three blue dials are not too much... Best, Kari

What I find painful with the moonphase is that you have to set it when you let the watch in the box for a while... You have to go to the Net, find the good site, then take a tooth pick and push till you find the right moonphase. Two nice watches, but I wo... 

2 must have apps for anyone with interest in watches are PuristPro (of course) and Watchville. The latter has a great time function for setting complications like moonphase, leapyear, etc. In terms of 5712 vs 5980 I think it is impossible to choose as bot... 

Had the same dilemma and started with the 5712, only to flip it for the 5980. I enjoyed the presence of the larger and thicker watch, but missed the thin profile and comfort of the 5712. Then along came the 5960, and I just had to add it to the staple. Co...

Well my first Patek was the 5980R-001. Beautiful! Between the 3 in question presented here I would choose again and again the same. But if going for steel, go for the 5712. I can argue that the Nautilus is a sports watch in name and form, but not in natur...  

Sport chic but not for swimming. The steel 5980 I guess is supposed to go swimming. Seen many here in the forum wearing the 5980 in the pool. Bill

Personal choice i guess, I feel more comfortable wearing the 5980.
