Hi Bob, How are you doing my friend? sorry i didn't find the time to reply earlier, i got very busy at the office.
My final buy ended up to be the 5980, and the 5205. I had a change of mind about the 5170, plus my dealer told me i would have to wait longer.
I'm very excited, i will have the 2 watches in just a few weeks. I will share pictures once I have them.
It has been a very exciting process, I'm very grateful to everyone who made contributions, and helped me make my decision. I was so happy to read all responses, and i sincerely enjoyed each and everyone one of the posts.
Thanks again!
My First Patek.

Hi guys, I'm considering making a purchase of a Patek. This would be the first Patek I will own, and I'm confused as to which piece to go for amongst the following: Nautilus 5712R, 5980R or 5980/1A. I know either of these pieces would be a great buy, but ...
I'd go 5712
By: Mostel : June 27th, 2011-19:48
Just my opinion... Of the modern patek Nautilus... the 5712 seems to have a certain panache... that the 5980 does not... 5712 being more versatile.. sporty yet equally elegant... but also a little mysterious because of the moon... I dunno... just prefer i...
5980 revisited
By: Mostel : June 28th, 2011-22:12
Didn't mean to be so harsh against the 5980... I've always had mixed feelings about it... but to clarify: the reason I think it can't really be a sportwatch (which it very much LOOKS like) is that bezel--which will just never hold up to actual devil-may-c...
Thicker or thinner
By: masterspiece : June 28th, 2011-12:48
The 5980 is larger and thicker but wears well on the wrist. 5712 is smaller and wears just as well. Both are very nice pieces for a "first" Patek. The 5980 has the same movement as the iconic 5960. 5980 vs 5712 ~ Chronograph or Moonphase? The best is to t...

My brother and GF both loves the 5980 but I wouldnt think twice before buying the 5712. It's WAY thinner, much more elgeant and better looking imo, go for that one and DONT FORGET TO POST PICS!!!
getting more confused
By: director : July 1st, 2011-16:57
.... so i went to my dealer yesterday to pull the trigger on one of the mentioned pieces, it just happened that they had just received a new Annual calender chrono 5960R. I really loved the 5960. So i told my dealer to allow me time to consult my good fol...
LOL, director.

I wish I had your probelm! Well, the 5960 was first launched in 2006, Patek's first totally in-house automatic chrono. it is a very nice piece and sits well on the wrist as do your other two choices. It is an iconic piece. Some do not prefer the way the a...

Thanks again Bob, seriously I've never had this much difficulty buying any watch. I've fallen so in love with all Patek pieces, I'm very close to pulling the trigger on 2 instead, I just really cannot help it lol. My AD is not helping either, I was also s...
The 5205?
By: masterspiece : July 3rd, 2011-23:21
Now, I'm really jealous!!!! LOL I have yet to see the 5205 in the metal but I just LOVE the design. (It sort of reminds me of the 5196P... sort of. Well, maybe not that much LOL) Judging from the photos I've seen of it, I think I prefer the two-tone rhodi...

By: P@trick@Belgium : July 7th, 2011-14:21
first the weight, at 145 grams very comfy to wear IMO, but I have to say I'm used to wear watches up to 200 gr ( AP ROO, Panerai etc ...) my biggest fear was that this watch would be to small in terms of size compared to the rest of my collection and the ...
5690 vs 5980
By: swjoseph : July 2nd, 2011-03:10
5960 and 5980 are very different as many have already said. I would love to own both but the idea of vesting 2 Pateks of the same movement and similar function is bogging me. My resolution is to trade my 5960 for a 5980 and I can only tell which one wins ...
5712 is a great start
By: Yale95 : July 21st, 2011-17:44
I know it sounds hypocritical to recommend a watch I don't own but I do own the closest living relative, the 3712 which was my first Patek. My AD had just gotten a 3712 in stock and I was in the right place at the right time. He even sold it to me at 15% ...
I had the same problem
By: dr.kol : September 15th, 2015-22:40
and found a simple solution: - 3712. It's the sister of 5712 and is a slim alternative with a lovely movement. - 5980/1A-001 is a great chronograph. - 5711/1A-010 is a good copy of the "original". I think three blue dials are not too much... Best, Kari
Apps
By: keks : September 17th, 2015-03:44
2 must have apps for anyone with interest in watches are PuristPro (of course) and Watchville. The latter has a great time function for setting complications like moonphase, leapyear, etc. In terms of 5712 vs 5980 I think it is impossible to choose as bot...
All great choices!
By: Warlock521 : September 17th, 2015-06:33
Had the same dilemma and started with the 5712, only to flip it for the 5980. I enjoyed the presence of the larger and thicker watch, but missed the thin profile and comfort of the 5712. Then along came the 5960, and I just had to add it to the staple. Co...
First Patek: The 5980R
By: RGS : September 17th, 2015-11:38
Well my first Patek was the 5980R-001. Beautiful! Between the 3 in question presented here I would choose again and again the same. But if going for steel, go for the 5712. I can argue that the Nautilus is a sports watch in name and form, but not in natur...

By: BABKA : September 17th, 2015-15:47
...and can say I enjoyed the 5712/1a much more. I love thick and bulky watches but the 5980 just looked and felt odd to me. The 5712 was elegant and casual at the same time. It can be worn with just about anything and felt like a complicated watch (consid...
