Patek Philippe

I just walked away.

I explained to the guy, who is just an acquaintance, that he needs to get over the fact that it's not going to happen. I told him, no Patek dealer is going to give you the opportunity to double your money by selling you a watch. I asked him, if you were a Patek Philippe dealer, would you give yourself an arbitrage opportunity? He obviously hadn't thought of it from this perspective, and he said no, he wouldn't sell someone like him a watch. And simply thinking that it'll happen won't will it into existence.

I meet a lot of people who really embarrass themselves when it comes to the subject of watches. Even friends have inadvertently insulted me about watches. One woman, who's a venture capitalist, totally forgot her place, when she once said "sell my Panerai for X and I'll give you a commission" when she wanted an extremely high price for her Panerai when Panerai watches were not hot. I didn't argue with her - you can't win with fools. And I don't suffer fools well.

Another fella once said, "find me a Patek Philippe Nautilus at a super low price and I'll give you a finder's fee" and I said back to him, "I'm insulted, if I found it for as low of a price as you'd want, what's to prevent me from buying it myself? You're implying that this isn't an option for me. You're asking for something unrealistic, why would someone give you a spanking deal for a finder's fee? They'll just keep it themselves. You're totally unrealistic."

I'm getting upset thinking about this. Sure, we all have foot in our mouth moments. But people are so laser focused on something - especially when it concerns a hard to get watch - that they really lose sense of reality.
