Patek Philippe

Sad to read that Tiffany & Co is not stepping up to the plate...

The retail world has become spoiled.  It used to look like this, people would wander in, without an appointment.  The salesperson wouldn't know if the client was serious or just killing time.  Yet, the hardworking and knowledgeable salesperson gives a thorough presentation each time to the client.  Sometimes it's a waste of time, the client doesn't have any interest nor money.  Sometimes it's a great use of time, the client is impressed, buys a watch, and tells his friends to buy watches from the knowledgeable salesperson.  Today, salespeople are so used to appointments (this small barrier makes someone much more seriously likely to buy something) that they are entirely not interested in walk in customers anymore - because 1, they assume that walk in is waiting for their appointment time; 2, they don't want to upset their colleague by talking to their colleague's client; and 3, they don't know if you're likely to buy anything, and they only want to waste their breath on people who've made an appointment because that barrier to entry increases their chance of making a sale.  They'll have to adapt soon though as the world leaves the pandemic economy of appointments and goes back to the pre-pandemic non-appointment ideology.

Same experience with Tiffany Patek

They should stop employing people who have worked in watch industry and train them. There are lot of people who have great watch knowledge and do not BS about wish list.

Very interesting write up. 👌🏽

The relative significance of a family owned AD is not something I would have ever considered.

Definitely something very important!

Patek Philippe really wants a jewelry store staff that has little turnover who has worked with their clients for years and are on a first-name basis with their clients. "Hello ArmisT, how are you and the family doing? Say hello to your daughter and your new son-in-law for us! And we hope your dog Spot is feeling better after eating too much chocolate cake! And your son is in high school now, he probably needs community service volunteer hours - can he come and volunteer at our charity event? And your wife is invited to our ladies' brunch next Sunday after church! And you're going to join us for the men's night next week right? We've got pre-embargo Cuban cigars for you!" They want that image of two families; a jeweler's family who has a close relationship with their client's entire family - who knows all their clients' children and the client's passions. Patek Philippe expects its partners to really know their community very well. And that's why Patek Philippe doesn't want to get into the retail game, because they know that their partners can do a better job in most major markets.

I see it…what you describe is a very powerful strategy which especially with right clientele will nurture next generation clients (eg the kids of a given client).

When you say family owned AD, the main/only one that comes to mind is Govberg, only cause I’ve seen pics with his young boys who are being groomed for the family business.  I guess PP’s Stern family and LVs Arnault family are all same model but on brand side.

Arnault is definitely not the same...

You're absolutely right, jewelers are in a special position, they know the kids age, graduation, and big celebrations within the family.  So it's only natural for a jeweler to maintain that relationship with a family through generations.

Arnault's empires are all much too large and are less high touch than these Patek Philippe - so no, I wouldn't try to find too many parallels there. Arnault's empire is also much larger, more mass market, more multidisciplines (fashion, to accessories, to wine and spirits, and more) and about 50X larger than Patek Philippe in revenue.

There are A LOT MORE STORES in USA that are family run than just Govberg. Lots more. Perhaps Govberg is just good at the marketing side of the whole thing which is why you thought of Govberg first. Govberg does try to do a good job. I unfortunately had a lacking experience during my last visit - I came to my appointment five minutes early, but the team was running behind schedule and was unable to receive me for quite some time - so long that I had to be departing by the time they were able to receive me. I won't say anymore as I can be identified and I don't want to criticize the store. But going back to family owned ADs, Govberg is hardly unique in this sense.

Very interesting and well written article. Thanks for taking your time to write and post!

3000 words! What a long article! Thanks for sticking it out!

Well spent time in my opinion!

And - as you point out yourself - much of this don't only apply to PP AP's, but equally well to AP's of other brands - and indeed in other branches. The intellectual level of this article as well as many other posts, is what holds this forum above others and keep me here.
