It's not my place to comment in detail but I will say for certain that there wasn't any calculated attempt on Hodinkee's part to deceive anyone - these were the facts as reported to us by the subject and corroborated by Phillips, and I certainly detected no calculated conspiracy on their part either. To the extent that there is something that doesn't seem quite logical, well, there is a lot about how watches are allocated that isn't quite logical!
So the now the owner of the 5711 Tiffany is none other than Zack Lu

My take is they knew perfectly well
what they were doing yet underestimated their readers' scrutiny. (Not mine, to be clear.) They must have known details would come to light anyway and were doing their best to try to frame it - and be fast about it, too. Well, didn't quite work out.
Under Phillips' rules, this isn't the case
If the winning buyer doesn't pay, Phillips has discretion over whether and how to resell the lot, including via a private sale. There is no obligation to offer it to the second highest bidder.

possibly the winning bidder realised he had been scammed by fictitious inside bids driving the price up and then bailed. Once the fictitious bidder was eliminated then Lu could well have
ended up with the last remaining legitimate bid. He still overpaid though, You can get one at Tiffanys for a spend of $ 2 million no problem.
