Maps of the World
Among the new pieces in Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, two share a close common point: a map of the world combining engraving and enamel.
A/ CALATRAVA MINUTE REPEATER AND WORLD TIME REF. 5531G-010 “PLANISPHERE”
This reference is a limited edition of 10 watches with a dial depicting a map of the world evoking the beauty of the continental plates and the complexity of the geological structures that shape the ocean floor.
The white gold case measures 40.2 x 11.49 mm.

The
engraver first shapes the
ocean depths by hand, which are then
coated with
translucent blue enamel, using the traditional technique of
champlevé enameling.

The
enameller later renders the effect of the
mid-ocean ridges and the
oceanic trenches, working with
transparent enamels in
3 colors.
After successive firings, the engraver adds his finishing touch to produce his interpretation of the reliefs of the continental plates.
The skeletonized hour hand in white gold has a shape inspired by the Southern Cross constellation.

B/ POCKET WATCH REF. 992/190G-001 “MAP OF THE WORLD” This is a
unique piece representing a
planisphere which expresses, like the dial of the ref. 5531G-010, the beauty of the
continental plates and the complex
geological structure of the
ocean floor.
The stand, in white gold like the case, is inspired by the structure of a celestial dual ellipse.
Its
oval base, in
blue quartz, is embellished with a
blue sapphire cabochon (0.36 ct).

The
engraver hand-chiseled the
sea bed, which the
enameler then coated with
translucent blue enamel.
Using a palette of transparent enamels in 4 colors, he then created an effect of volume in the mid-ocean ridges and the oceanic trenches.
The white gold case measures 44.1 x 9.15 mm.
Also note that a blue sapphire cabochon (0.34 ct) adorns the crown.
The dial was decorated with hand-executed guilloché work.
The paths of the meridians and the parallels, engraved on this decor, shine through translucent blue enamel, according to the technique of flinqué enameling.
As a reminder, the flinqué technique consists of combining guilloché and enameling, while the champlevé technique consists of combining engraving and enameling.
Finally, applied Breguet numerals and faceted Dauphine-style hands, all in white gold, indicate the time and the seconds hand is shaped like a compass hand.

The pocket watch is powered by
hand-wound caliber 17''' LEP PS -

I find this duo fascinating: it is the other major new release with ref. 5249R-001 “The Crow and the Fox”, in my opinion, even if I am not fully in love with the dial of the pocket watch.
And I think it would be quite a dream to be able to collect both.
What about you?
Thanks for reading.
Best, Emmanuel
