Patek Philippe

The magic of Patek Philippe...I like that!

In the Italian culture we love to make names smaller/younger to signify friendship, and in English that’s best achieved with the “y”. So, Shammy you made me think about what it is about PP compared to other great companies (non boutique) that evokes such passion. It brings to mind another great passion of mine, the opera. Puccini and Verdi, two absolute great composers of Italian opera. Puccini’s brilliance is very easily understood...I have never brought a date to La Boheme who hasn’t left moved at the very least. Now bringing the same date with zero opera exposure to Rigoletto, or La Traviata....far less of a response. Now I’m by no way saying that Puccini’s operas don’t have serious music substance because I’ve studied some of them from my classical musician upbringing and they have jaw dropping musical complexity. And not to say that Verdi doesn’t appeal to the uneducated masses because everybody and their mother knows two of the arias from both of the aforementioned operas. If you pressed me for the greatest of the two, I would say Verdi but for years I would’ve said Puccini because the genius of Verdi needs to be understood. This reminds me of say Breguet and Patek Philippe. The guilloche dial of a Breguet appeals to everyone. The craftsmanship is easy for the casual watch lover to understand. Now the basic Calatrava is a different story. 5196, for example....to the uninitiated, it looks like like a timex circa 1985. Stick dial, dauphine hands....could you get more boring? Ahh but go down to your local AD and compare it to a timex....well it’s like comparing a watch to something that has successfully captured a part of the sun in a 37mm case. And that’s just the basic Calatrava....the London Limited that you own...Christ!! And we need not mention the movements themselves. I was going to ask your opinion on something, even though I probably know the answer but I got carried away as usual so I’ll make a separate post.

Apologies to the Timex folks!
