What a dilemma ! Actually there is no good or bad answer both are great but quite different options in spite of the same Lemania base movement

Jan 14, 2024,10:05 AM

I can only tell you about my personal experience since I have both 5070G and 5970R…

I also started with 5070 many years ago and I was in love with it : a very oversized classy chronograph with some vintage and modern look at the same time, the ultimate sport chic watch imho (5740 is certainly a good contender but obviously there are no vintage touch at all and I love it). You get it I love this reference, 5070 has so much charm in addition to beauty! And in spite of this true love I had to let it go for funding a very special watch that I didn’t want to miss as it is so special to me and a particularly exceptional example (I am talking about my Wonder Watch, the ones who know me well here know that I am talking about my 3448). Since that day I know that I would acquire a 5070 again as I was missing it a lot. I certainly don’t regret my Wonder Watch but promised myself I would get another 5070.

In the meantime I had the opportunity to acquire a 5970R ; it has been a grail for me since ages and once I had the opportunity I pulled the trigger immediately as you can imagine. I wear it quite often, it’s a fantastic watch so easy to set (as it was rightly mentioned by patekova) and it’s pure Patek DNA. If you have a chance to acquire a 5970 in any colour do not hesitate, each of the four is having its charm (J rare, R flamboyant, G versatile, P ultimate). But even if 5970 is amazing and another league, the look is totally different and I was still thinking of my former 5070. So when I had the opportunity to acquire a 5070G freshly serviced by PP last year I couldn’t resist and fulfilled my promise to myself. I am now the happy owner of both 5970R and 5070G (in addition to my Wonder Watch in J) and so happy to have such a trio in the 3 metals for completing each other perfectly. Btw please don’t rank them on a podium I am equally happy with the 3 of them, they are so different.

What I mean is don’t think in terms of value or whatever other criteria but exclusively love and passion to take your decision. 5970 is fantastic but 5070 also, so take the time to decide: will you miss more the 5970 that you didn’t get or the 5070 that you had but no more… Once you are positive about the reply you are ready 😉.

My two cents…

Trading a 5070G for a 5970G (or R)

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 10th, 2024-01:24
I know opinions run high on this Forum about the merits of both the 5070 and 5970. I am thinking of trading my 5070 toward the purchase of a 5970, a watch I have long desired. In part, it's to help cushion the high cost of the upgrade. It's also because I...

I think its a good move

Trading to the 5970

 By: Bob L. : January 10th, 2024-02:42
The 5070 is a beautiful watch. Almost a unique look for Patek. As much as I like it in pictures, however, it has never felt comfortable on my wrist. In contrast, the 5970, in whatever iteration, has always felt perfectly proportioned to me. It’s obviously...

Thank you

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 10th, 2024-11:40
I feel the same way about the 5070 -- it is a beautiful looking watch, and historically significant among other fine points, but it does feel a little bit big on me. I have a smaller wrist and for perspective, my 5146G is the most PERFECT fitting watch. T...

Hi mate

 By: Mr.Gatsby : January 10th, 2024-02:54
I own both. So when I acquired the 5970R later all my attention was on the PC chronograph and less so on the 5070. However I am quite sure if I were to sell the 5070 I would miss it. It’s a great watch to have in the stable. If you can, sell something els...

Great question, that I have been debating with myself for years.

 By: ChristianDK : January 10th, 2024-04:35
I’m really curious to hearopinions from people who own or owned both of these. I understand very well the point of owning both, they are apples and oranges, but what if one really HAS to choose?

I have a 5070G and

 By: Chromatic Fugue : January 10th, 2024-05:03
have recently thought about this same trade, oddly enough. Some thoughts: First, if I had to choose between them and their prices were at all comparable (which of course they’re not), I’d go with the 5970, hands down. Second, and on the other hand, you ca...

I've had some of the same questions as I've thought to death about pulling the 5970 trigger

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 10th, 2024-11:51
I worry about wearing it outside and doing something clumsy with it on my wrist! As for setting it, I've probably learned to do one or two more complicated things in my life and could probably figure this one out. But my manual 5070, or my 3941 that stays...

2 completely different watches...

 By: mdg : January 10th, 2024-06:34
...I would do everything possible to have both.

Easy answer for me in one scenario.

 By: vitalsigns : January 10th, 2024-07:03
If you must trade the 5070 to get the 5970, then by all means, do it. If it’s not necessary, then maybe get the 5970 and consider keeping the 5070 for the time being. You can always sell it later.

This is a good point.

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 10th, 2024-11:54
In my case, that might move me in the direction of the 5970R, as the G along with my 5070G and 5146G might be too much of the same (good?) thing.

Hehehe!!! ;)

Comparisons.

 By: Chromatic Fugue : January 10th, 2024-14:56
I have a 5070, and I have a bathroom (actually, several). I much prefer the 5070!

Haha

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 10th, 2024-15:02
A great bathroom has proved to be one of the best places in the house to stare lovingly at a nice watch for a while!

In total quietness... :)

 By: amanico : January 10th, 2024-15:21

I personally love the 5070.

 By: gary_g : January 10th, 2024-11:53
But 5970 is on another level. Prices keep going up. Where’s the 5070 is staying flat over the past decade. But in reality you can’t go wrong here. Both are fantastic.

Thanks for that perspective. I guess for me it comes down to buying watches predominantly if not exclusivity out of love.

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 10th, 2024-12:03
So I would have to be honest about how I felt about both the 5970 and 5070, and buy and hold on that basis." Polyamory" is ok when applied to watch collecting!

The key here is manual.

 By: myles721 : January 10th, 2024-13:27
With this watch, you have to decide whether you are actually going to wear it on a regular basis. I think that’s the key. If you are willing to keep it in a safe then you need both. if you’re going to wear it, you really don’t need the other one because t...

That is a good point.

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 10th, 2024-17:07
My intention would be to wear, or at least wind it everyday. I would probably only put it in the safe if I were going on a trip to a place where such a watch wouldn't make sense to take. Since the pandemic, and now that I've recently sold my business and ...

5970 for sure…

 By: Watches_passion : January 10th, 2024-14:32
I have been looking for a 5740 for long time but i failed to get one at a reasonable price until one dealer showed me the 5970R last week… this is a different level watch… i was blown away even when i compare it to my 5270P salmon… of course the 5740 is a...

I suspect your dilemma

 By: yming : January 10th, 2024-16:59
Is easily solved by trying out the 5970 on your wrist.. It would wear alot smaller then then 5070, 2mm is a lot + the 5070 has longer lugs.. The 5070 has a beautiful case design with the stepped bezels and lugs but so does the 5970 with the faceted lugs a...

Thank you, these are really pertinent observations

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 10th, 2024-17:22
I find myself wearing my white gold watches much more than my rose or yellow gold ones and although they are all different movements and styles, I think the versatility and relative quietness of the white gold really suits me.

Both are great and if you can

 By: GLau : January 10th, 2024-17:38
afford to trade up with your 5070, IMO it is a good move because 5970 is simply another level !

Definitely a good move.

 By: Miles_151 : January 10th, 2024-18:25
But I can only imagine how difficult it will be to part with your 5070. The 5070 is a very special watch. But the 5970 is just that bit more special. Good luck and obviously you could always sell one of your kidneys and have both 😜. M.

While my experience/viewpoint may go against the perspective of the majority, as an owner of 5970, I find it to be not in the least bit

 By: patekova : January 10th, 2024-22:07
onerous, difficult or challenging to set all the calendar/moonphase functions. Each function is quickset by its own individual corrector. It is quick (pun intended) and easy. All you have to know is when the most recent full moon occurred. And within a fe...

Tats a good point about setting the calendar

 By: yming : January 11th, 2024-00:49
The corrector at 11 is really useful - say the watch stopped for 10 days, one just needs to push that corrector 10x and it’s done. I am not sure why this function isn’t there for the 5270 or the other perpetuals.

Nice feature

 By: coz : January 11th, 2024-02:14
Agreed, this is a great feature that I believe was deleted on the new 5270. For the original question I had 2 5070s in the past love them but just wore a little uncomfortable for me. I tried a 3970 and a bit too small. I'd love a 5970 one day too...

What a dilemma ! Actually there is no good or bad answer both are great but quite different options in spite of the same Lemania base movement

Interestingly in 40 years of collecting I have never gone back to a watch which I parted company with. I view that as like Ex’s. An Ex is an Ex for a reason. However if the situation arose I think I would make an exception to my own rule for a 5070 or 597...

You with your pair my friend are a completely different level 🙈🙈

 By: Mike H : January 14th, 2024-16:20
For both references with your 5970G salmon dial and your 5070P 😍😍😍😍😍 But indeed I fully agree with the comparison with my other ex’s 😉

Thanks Mike for this thoughtful and personal reply.

 By: BuffaloWatch : January 17th, 2024-12:49
Your criteria of love and passion are the true bottom line. I really appreciate my 5070G for its historic significance, its design, balance and symmetry, its visual appeal up close and far away. I find I wear it probably more often than my other Patek wat...
