Hi Ming! We tried Pizzeria Mozza too not too long after it opened and I agree with you, good but not spectacular. Osteria Mozza next door was ten times better. We sat at the mozzarella bar which I think is the best seat in the house. We were able to watch them make delicious small plates of burrata and salads and even chatted with Nancy Silverton a little.
One of the best things about the pizza places in NY, especially in Long Island, is not only the pizza but they also have really good classic Italian dishes like pasta primavera, rigatoni ala vodka or chicken parm and those are far better than anything I can find here at the same price. And ooh...the Chicken Rolls and Broccoli Pinwheels! They are awesome and you can't find them here, at least I haven't yet. When you go to NY, you absolutely have to get a fresh chicken roll with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
Pizza in CA is good too, just in a different way. I guess it would be the same as eating really good pizza in Chicago. Maybe CA is somewhere in between. The crust is usually thicker than NY pizza but thinner than Chicago. I haven't tried too many pizza places here but I do like Lampost Pizza and Costco's is actually not bad when its hot and fresh and yes, the pizza at Melrose Bar and Grill was definitely excellent.
