New (to me) Tellurium Kepler Part II - The Lunar Eclipse Cometh
For anyone interested in how to read this:
1. The sun is fixed on the 12:00 position on the case. There is a line coming down from it for reference
2. The moon is the small disc at roughly the 6:00 position on the dial covering up the astrological sign. Note that it's yellow on top dark blue on the bottom. This is because the sun is lighting up the yellow side. And since we can see the yellow side from earth (the center map) we can tell it's a full moon.
3. The green dragon hand at 12:00 and 6:00 (the 6:00 part is obscured by the moon). The dragon hand was created during medieval times to represent the alignment of the planes on which the moon orbits the earth vs the earth orbits the sun. Those two planes are offset by about 5 degrees, but the cross each other twice per month. If the green dragon head and tail are aligned at either 12:00-6:00 the planes are crossing each other.
If there's a full moon while the planes are intersecting, you get a lunar eclipse!

Other fun details:
4. The hands are showing about 6:47. You can tell that GMT is 2:47AM based on the reference line dropping down from the sun and pointing between 2 and 3 but closer to 3. The hands showing 6:47 on the dial could be either AM or PM depending on whether the time is GMT +4 or GMT -8. If I were based in Oman (GMT +4), it would be AM. I'm on the US west coast, so it's PM for me
5. The world rotates once per day. The wire stretching across the globe shows which part of the world the sun is shining on. Anything above the wire is getting sun. Anywhere below is after sunset. Since the US west coast is below the line, you can tell that the sun set already here. Oman is clearly early in its day.
What a fun watch to explore!
