Yes, quartz watches are more practical...my wife won't wear mechanical and seriously I don't trust my young kids with mechanical watches quite yet.
That is a beautiful gift you have hidden for your daughter, she will love it.

with quartz watches is that you need to change the battery once in a while. As can be seen with my Suunto M3 for bicycle rides that is quite a challenge... I do have one other "proper" quartz watch stacked away currently. It will go to my daughter very so...
