The bête noire of every vintage collector . . .
. . . is the deaf watchmaker. I had several issues with my previous watchmaker; the final indignity was polishing the case of the Ω ref 2364 . . .
[the only image in my files taken before initial servicing]
. . . which had a beautiful patina. I told the jeweler for whom he worked that the case was to be untouched. Imagine the horror when I went to pick it up, only to find the brushing had been completely removed. The jeweler was able to restore the matte finish (except for between the lugs), at the cost of yet more precious metal removed.
That was the last straw. Fortunately, I was able to find a sympathetic local expert, and all my projects since have been entrusted to his care. He does precisely as asked, and willing to perform only the work necessary, in contrast to many watchmakers who insist on fully servicing a movement.
The sad part is that he's poised to retire in the foreseeable future. When that happens, I'm likely to hang up my vintage hat at the same time.
