Patek Philippe

I am seriously considering taking the plunge on a patek philippe 5146 with the cream dial.  Anyone with any knowledge of this watch?  I've always been a Zenith guy, but thought was time to broaden my horizons....and empty my wallet.  Thanks.

 

with a solid and tested movement.  Very practical as well.  I would have bought this (PT though and grey dial though) if I did not manage to find my 5056P.

...until a good friend of mine drew my attention to 5146G (with gray dial) as his next target.  Very practical and "natural" on his wrist.  It kind of opened my eyes and had me re-consider the brand.  Like you, it broadened my horizen.  And I took a plunge on 5134P - sorry, I was not particularly looking for a calendar watch, and am relatively a "manual winding" guy   But my point to your post is 5146 is, yes it is a VERY good and I totally understand and agree that it takes you to the Patek world.  Great choice, I think.

and a great looking classic annual calender. Cream dial is also my favorite and personally I would prefer one with the newer cal.324. Good luck!

 

Just wanted to inquire, how can one tell if the watch they're looking at has the 315 base movement or the 324 base movement? They look similar.

I would prefer the 324 movement because of the 28.8K vph over the 315 movement; the slight sacrifice in reserve power is acceptable to me.

By the way, the Patek website still says that the 5146 comes with the 315 movement, are we absolutely certain that they have made the switch already?

Another odd thing; the Patek 5127 on a leather strap uses the 315 movement when the 5127/1 on a gold bracelet uses a 324 movement according to their website.

It'll be on your cert of authenticity as well as inscribed on one of the movement  plates.

I forgot there is a line that says "Caliber: ____" I was thinking that it only had the movement and case serial number and one cannot tell from the movement serial number whether or not the movement is a 315 or a 324. But that's not applicable since there's an actual description line for the caliber.

I have a 5146J with slate dial which I adore, but mine is the transitional model, it has the 315 movement but it has the newer 4 arms on the balance just like the balance on the 324.

I much prefer the old 8 arm version.Much prettier. think Patek simplified it to cut down the time needed to poise the balance and gave the reason for doing so as to improve the drag of the balance as it spins faster.

...It's a classic. Here is one with cream dial.

my fave is the 5146P for the dark ebony-gray dial and markers without numerals... and the small detail of the 'frame' around the date window.. it all adds up to what we are all saying here... a very natural wristwatch that goes with everything...

The Calatrava case is so damn beautiful, flowing, classic, but in this reference, larger, a great size, and has such a nice centered wrist-stance... A real world Patek, highly wearable, love 'em.

Its a brilliant watch. I have owned both the J & G with the cream coloured dial.

IMO the combination that you have chosen is an excellent one.

The 1st one that I had (J) came with the 315 movement. But when I replaced it late last year it came with the newer 324 movement.

I would imagine that by now, all the 5146's that leave Geneva have got the 324 fitted.

But please check before you buy, if its important to you.

i have a pp 5146j, i bought it two years ago and i have been very pleased, i use it every day at work (i am an md) and have not have any problems. i do go every year to new york and have it check for waterproofing.. i think you can not go wrong with a pp 5146. thanks jorge

Definitely a beautiful watch and right on the top of my list. For me the gray dial please, but the gray dial looks superb too.. If you go for this watch you would have made a wise decision IMO. Good luck.
