silly question to some perhaps, but a friend of mine just posed that question to me and I don't know the answer. any expert here can share their knowledge on this? thanks.
You didn't mention which watch... It depends on the watch!

The question isn't complete. You didn't mention which watch. There are watches that wind both directions because they have separate mainsprings - one for a complication and one for the time keeping. For instance some Audemars Piguet Grand Sonneries winds clockwise for the time keeping movement and winds Counter clockwise to power the Grand Sonnerie portion. Okay, you might say, that's a super rare watch - and that you meant more normal watches... Let's give a mass produced example; a $10,000 USD normal watch. Zenith has a chronograph watch that winds clockwise for the time keeping mechanism, and has a separate mainspring for a special chronograph version.
