A. Lange & Söhne

Examining Saxonias at the A. Lange & Söhne Boutique New York (2/20/2018)

Today I visited the Lange Boutique in New York.  My mission was to review the Saxonias I had been reading and thinking about.  I wanted to examine these three:

  • Saxonia Thin 37 (no second hand) in white gold
  • Saxonia Thin 37 (no second hand) in pink gold
  • Saxonia (35) (with sub-seconds at 6 o’clock) in pink gold

Why was I looking?  Because over the last several weeks I’ve become very interested in watches of a certain mid-century style like my father used to wear.  I'm not sure why this new interest took root just now, but this would be like an everyday watch for me.  And it's not a new look.  It's the thin, classic, no-date dress watch under 40mm.  In my case I'm thinking a design aesthetic from the 1940s to the 60s, not earlier.  So it’s more Don Draper than Jay Gatsby.  More Saxonia than 1815.

After reading Moe Jaber’s enthusiastic comments about his Saxonia, I wrote to him and one thing led to another.  He recommended going to the New York Boutique, and today was the day.  It was a tremendous experience.  I was very impressed by everything about the boutique.  I told manager Emong Wang about the three watches I was interested in, and she graciously allowed me to take some quick shots for the forum.

So here are my three choices.  My outfit could have been better.  My photos could have been better!  All three choices look pretty good in the photos, but subtle and important differences emerged in the metal.  I have my favorite, and there is also one that Emong thought would be the best (turns out it's the same one).  What do you think?
