A. Lange & Söhne

I enjoy all watches, but I do understand what you mean...

As you become more and more selective, you realize you stray away from the big brands... Perfectly understandable. Although I do have to say, Patek Philippe, Lange, and others do come up with something genuinely interesting that cannot be achieved by the small independents. Then again, there are small independents, such as MB&F, who continuously surprise us with something astronomical or out of this world (pun not intended).
There are a lot of watches out there. All to be enjoyed! But some are to be enjoyed by a very special few such as yourself.
Back to Lange. Lange has a restoration department, I don't know the headcount, but generally restoration departments are a very high expenditure and do not necessarily generate enough revenue to cover their costs. While I don't know the actual numbers, I would say that the restoration department is not likely to be a major profit center for any brand, Lange being no exception. Parmigiani Fleurier is probably one of the few brands that actually has a big restoration department intended as a revenue generator. Lange is also one of the few brands for its small size (especially small in units) to have a formal restoration department. And being a Richemont brand, Lange shares relatively few resources with others. Unlike Swatch, where the brands will share more resources and technology across the group.
I personally think Lange has made a lot of mistakes in the past few years. Especially with making these huge, thick, expensive, super complications. I really disliked the Lange 1 Perpetual calendar tourbillon, the movement really lacked German architecture and looked very Swiss in many ways. Most of the subsequent models, I disliked. They're too big. And while I'm usually amongst the first to criticize Lange, I do have to say, their restoration department is actually a plus for the maison, since it would normally be too small to have one. The high-ups really carved a space, made a headcount, made a budget, and put a lot of thought into a restoration department that would normally not exist for such a small brand. Especially with a brand that has such a truncated history.
We all look at Patek Philippe as the gold standard. But Patek Philippe isn't without their faults. Yes, they claim they will restore any watch made in their history. But they didn't stipulate that it would be done at a reasonable cost and a reasonable turnaround time.
